Wow, nice Wagon Queen. One of my perverse dream cars, although I would do mine in brown or beige just to be different, I mean, if the premise is that it was supposed to be a real car in-movie, you have to allow for some being made in other colors, right?

actually if we ran a manta with a sbc they might be so tickled they'd wave us through. we were supposed to race in nov., we spent a bunch of time finding one since no one had ever done it (they're pretty rare even outside lemons,) and then somebody had one at the CO (I think) race a few weeks ago

You still have time. We were going to race a 300ZX when we first started until we figured out that was a BAD idea. Picked up an Escort for $300 and built it in 6 weeks. We've now raced it 6 times. It has been pretty reliable and we get to spend time in the car and not under the car on race weekends.

Two of us have kids and our lead mechanic has a (different) day job where he works 70+ hours per week. We were iffy on making the race before this, we're hosed now. They just opened a rallycross track nearby, I am thinking about prepping my e30 and just doing that

I understand. We have two small kids too. You have to balance things. Try again some other time. It is huge fun.
